Will a Second-Gen Tacoma Camper Shell Fit a Third-Gen Tacoma?
Verify fitment with the merchant before you buy.

DO NOT TRANSFER WITHOUT FITMENT APPROVAL
Do not treat it as an approved swap without a matching manufacturer application. SnugTop publishes separate second-gen (2005–2015) and third-gen (2016–2023) Tacoma availability groups; buy or move a shell only when its maker matches the shell's exact SKU, destination bed length and cab configuration.
Manufacturer application groups separate the generations
Camper-shell makers publish vehicle-specific applications rather than a universal Tacoma fitment. SnugTop's manufacturer availability guide puts Tacoma Double Cab 6.5-foot shells into separate 2005–2015 and 2016–2023 vehicle groups. LEER likewise publishes a 100R application for 2005–2015 Tacoma and a separate 2016–2023 Tacoma cap application. See SnugTop's Tacoma availability guide, LEER's 2005–2015 100R listing, and LEER's 2016–2023 cap listing.
That does not prove that no custom modification could make a particular shell sit on another truck. It does establish the useful buying answer: the manufacturer documentation treats the generations as separate fitment applications. A photo, bed-length match, or marketplace seller statement is not a shared manufacturer approval.
What must match before a shell can be reused
1. The exact manufacturer application
The deciding evidence is a current fitment listing or written manufacturer confirmation that names the destination Tacoma and the shell part number. A generic listing for “Tacoma” is not enough.
2. Cab and bed configuration
The destination vehicle must match the shell's listed cab and bed configuration. Do not use a same-year listing for a different bed length as evidence for your truck.
3. The mounting and sealing plan
A shell that appears to sit on the bed still needs its manufacturer-approved clamps, mounting locations and weather sealing. If those instructions are missing for the destination truck, stop before drilling or buying hardware.
Compatibility snapshot
| Evidence you have | Decision |
|---|---|
| The shell maker lists the same SKU for both exact trucks and bed configurations. | Supported—follow that maker's installation instructions. |
| The listing names the destination truck but not the existing shell SKU or bed. | Unknown—obtain written confirmation. |
| The maker publishes separate generation-specific applications or does not list the destination truck. | Do not transfer as a supported fitment. |
Bottom line
For a second- to third-generation Tacoma shell move, the correct default is unknown until the shell manufacturer confirms the exact shell SKU for the destination truck. Do not buy, drill, or adapt a used shell on the assumption that a same-length Tacoma bed makes it a supported transfer. The same generation rule applies to current trucks; see the 2025 SR5 five-foot camper-shell fitment example.
