Bilstein 5100 vs 6112 for a Tacoma: Is the 6112 Worth It?

THE 6112 IS WORTH IT FOR THE LARGER COMPLETE FRONT SYSTEM—NOT JUST MORE LIFT

Choose the Bilstein 5100 when you want a lower-cost ride-height-adjustable damper that reuses the Tacoma's stock front springs. Pay for the 6112 when its included vehicle-specific springs, 60 mm body and additional oil capacity suit repeated rough-road use or a more complete front refresh. Both list up to 2.75 inches depending on application; neither proves that 33-inch tires will clear.

Quick comparison

Front suspension pathWhat Bilstein documentsBetter starting point whenMain limit
B8 5100 ride-height adjustable46 mm monotube, stock front coil spring, multiple spring-seat positionsThe stock springs suit the truck and value matters mostIt is a damper-based refresh, not a new matched spring package
B8 611260 mm body and digressive piston, two shocks, two springs and two spring seatsYou want the larger complete front system and its added oil capacityHigher cost does not approve a tire size or complete the rear suspension

The exact part number and allowed spring-seat position still control. Do not transfer a lift figure from one Tacoma application, engine or cab/drivetrain combination to another.

Why the 6112 costs more

The 6112 is not simply a 5100 with another lift setting. Bilstein describes a 60 mm body and piston, increased oil capacity and cooling, and vehicle-specific linear springs supplied with the kit. The larger body is the defensible reason to consider it for frequent washboard, rough roads or sustained damping work.

The 5100 ride-height-adjustable front shock uses a 46 mm monotube and the vehicle's stock front coil spring and OEM mounting hardware. It remains the more direct choice when the original spring rate matches the truck's permanent front weight and the goal is a practical level or modest lift.

Neither manufacturer page provides a universal “better ride” verdict. Tire pressure, spring condition, front accessory weight, rear spring choice, installation and alignment all affect the result.

Is the 6112 automatically better with armor or a winch?

No. The included 6112 spring is a defined application, not a promise to support every bumper-and-winch load. Inventory permanent front weight and use Bilstein's current application data before ordering. If the build needs a different spring rate, resolve that with the suspension manufacturer or a qualified installer rather than assuming the larger shock body fixes ride height.

The rear also remains a separate decision. A front 5100 or 6112 purchase does not select rear shocks, leaf springs or add-a-leaf capacity. Use the Bilstein 6112 supporting-parts checklist to plan the complete installation.

Will either setup clear 33-inch tires?

Not by lift height alone. “33-inch” is a category, not one physical dimension. Actual mounted diameter and section width vary by tire model and wheel width. Wheel offset changes where the tire travels relative to the upper control arm, frame, body mount and liners. Caster and ride height change the clearance envelope again.

Check clearance at full steering lock and through suspension compression after alignment. The Tacoma tire-size and rubbing guide explains why a nominal two- or three-inch lift cannot guarantee the result.

Which should you buy?

  • Buy the 5100 when the stock front coils are suitable, most use is on-road or light trail, and the budget is better spent on rear load support, tires, alignment or maintenance.
  • Buy the 6112 when you value the supplied spring package, larger damper and increased oil capacity for repeated rough-road use.
  • Buy neither yet if the exact Tacoma application, permanent front load, rear plan or desired spring-seat position is unresolved.

Bottom line

The 5100 is the value choice when reusing the stock spring is appropriate. The 6112 earns its premium when you actually need its included springs, 60 mm body and greater oil capacity. Do not pay for the 6112 because a seller implies it makes 33s fit; tire clearance is a separate geometry decision.
