XTR1 vs XTR3 for a Ford Maverick With Retrax XR

XTR1 FOR TWO-BAR CARGO; XTR3 FOR THREE-BAR SUPPORT

High confidence for the advertised Maverick Retrax XR builds · Last verified 26 Oct 2026

Choose XTR1 if two crossbars and four uprights support your cargo; choose XTR3 when you specifically need three crossbars, six uprights or a longer supported platform. The current Maverick Retrax XR pages publish the same load ratings for both, so XTR3's higher price does not buy a higher stated capacity.

Xtrusion advertised both Retrax XR packages for the Maverick. They share the same cover-track interface and material system, but the frame layouts serve different cargo. The $500 stage-one difference should be justified by the third support plane—not by an assumed increase in payload.

Those ratings are stated as evenly distributed and limited by the OEM bed-rail capacity, whichever is less. They are not the final Maverick-plus-cover system limit.

Choose XTR1 when

  • your kayak, board, tent or cargo carrier is designed around two crossbars;
  • four upright attachment points provide the support you need;
  • lower cost and fewer parts matter more than a third support plane; or
  • you want the simplest Retrax XR-specific Xtrusion structure.

The XTR1 package already includes Retrax XR brackets, reinforcement plates and the named structural hardware. Buying XTR3 only for a higher advertised load number is not supported by the current pages.

Choose XTR3 when

  • the cargo platform or tent benefits from three longitudinal support positions;
  • you need six uprights to distribute the structure across more rail locations;
  • you want more attachment surfaces for modular side structures; or
  • your cargo maker requires or materially benefits from a center crossbar.

The third bar can reduce unsupported span, but it does not automatically raise the permissible load. Get written confirmation for the exact tent, cargo platform and Retrax cover if load distribution is the reason for choosing XTR3.

Confirm the cover before ordering

Both pages are Retrax XR builds. RetraxONE MX and RetraxPRO MX do not provide the same integrated accessory tracks. Confirm the full cover name, Maverick model year and current part number—not merely the Retrax brand.

Xtrusion's XTR1 page currently identifies 2022+ Maverick. The XTR3 page displays inconsistent year wording in different portions of the listing. Ask Xtrusion to confirm your exact year and stage-one SKU in writing before a non-trivial purchase.

Height is a cargo decision

The 13-inch option keeps cargo lower. The 15-inch option is sold as cab height, but you should still measure your own truck and cargo. Confirm roof, antenna, rear-glass and garage clearance, especially for boards or a tent extending beyond the short bed.

For long cargo, record the actual crossbar spread and any bow/stern tie-down requirement. Rack height alone does not establish safe canoe, kayak or paddleboard support.

Load ratings do not stack

Do not add the Retrax cover rating, rack rating and Ford payload. The controlling limit is the lowest applicable value among the rack, cover rails, brackets, cargo mount, Ford payload label and installation instructions. Static means parked; off-road and highway loads must use their stated moving conditions.

Bottom line

XTR1 is the rational default for a Maverick Retrax XR when two crossbars solve the job. Pay for XTR3 when the third crossbar and two extra uprights solve a documented support or mounting need. Both current product pages state the same load ratings, so frame layout—not headline capacity—is the real decision.
