Ford Maverick 2K Hitch vs 4K Tow Package

· 2 min read

Ford Maverick 2K receiver equipment compared with a complete 4K tow package

A 2K RECEIVER IS NOT A 4K-TOW UPGRADE; 4K IS A FACTORY VEHICLE PACKAGE WITH COOLING, WIRING, BRAKE CONTROL AND RATING CHANGES

High confidence for 2025–2026 Ford documentation · Last verified 27 Oct 2026

Adding a receiver after delivery gives you an attachment point, not the 4K package. Ford requires the 4K Tow Package for trailers over 2,000 lb and lists it only on properly equipped AWD configurations.

Use the truck's original door/VIN configuration and towing guide—not the hitch's label—as the vehicle limit.

The 2K setup is a receiver and 4-pin lighting path for light trailers and accessories. Ford's 2026 4K Tow Package (53Q) adds a Class III 2-inch receiver, 4- and 7-pin connectors, trailer brake controller, upgraded cooling fan and powertrain-specific cooling hardware.

An aftermarket or dealer-installed receiver may carry a hardware label above 2,000 lb. Ford explicitly warns that receiver capacity can exceed the vehicle's maximum loaded trailer weight. The lowest applicable limit controls.

For 2025–2026, 4K capability requires AWD and the factory package. Even then, cargo, passengers, accessories and tongue weight consume payload. Ford lists a 400-lb maximum tongue load for the 4K receiver and requires the package for trailers over 2,000 lb.

Bottom line

If 2,001–4,000 lb towing is part of the purchase plan, buy the correctly configured factory 4K truck. Retrofitting a hitch later is not the same system.
