Ford Maverick Tire-Size Changes: Speedometer and Driver-Assistance Effects

CHANGING OUTSIDE DIAMETER CHANGES THE DISTANCE TRAVELED PER WHEEL REVOLUTION

High confidence · Last verified 27 Oct 2026

A larger tire generally makes actual speed and distance greater than indicated; a smaller tire does the opposite. Diameter changes can also alter effective gearing and the wheel-speed assumptions used by ABS, stability control and driver-assistance systems. Stay near an approved size and have any supported calibration performed correctly.

Nominal tire sizes are not exact diameters. Two models carrying the same size can differ in measured diameter and revolutions per mile, so use the specific manufacturer data when available.

Compatibility snapshot

ChangePotential result
Larger diameterSpeedometer/odometer may under-report; taller effective gearing
Smaller diameterSpeedometer/odometer may over-report; shorter effective gearing
Mixed circumferenceDriveline and wheel-speed disagreement risk
More width/offsetNew rubbing despite acceptable diameter
Unsupported calibrationWarning lamps or altered assist behavior may remain possible

An approximate speed relationship is:

`actual speed ≈ indicated speed × new diameter ÷ original diameter`

Use it for planning, not certification. Verify actual road speed with an independent legal method after installation. Tire wear and pressure also change rolling circumference.

Michelin specifically warns that diameter changes can affect speedometer accuracy, clearance, ABS and stability systems. Modern assists consume wheel-speed data alongside cameras and radar, so a tire that physically clears can still be a poor system-level choice.

Bottom line

Outside diameter is an electronic fitment input as well as a physical one. Keep changes conservative, use four matched tires, preserve ratings and obtain supported calibration guidance for the exact truck.

Before upsizing, use the largest stock-suspension Maverick tire guide.
