BAKFlip MX4 TS vs Retrax XR for a Ford Maverick Bed Rack

MX4 TS FOR BED SPACE; RETRAX XR FOR RACK-INDEPENDENT OPENING

High confidence in the product-path tradeoff · Last verified 26 Oct 2026

Choose the BAKFlip MX4 TS if lower price and avoiding a front-bed canister matter most; choose Retrax XR if you want a retractable cover that opens without folding panels through the rack-upright area. Both provide T-slot rails, but neither is compatible with every rack without the correct hardware and clearance check.

This is the useful comparison when the cover and rack are one purchase. Both families solve the missing-track problem, but they use the Maverick's short bed differently. The right choice depends less on the T-slot itself and more on how you need the cover to open after the rack is installed.

Prices are snapshots, not guarantees. Confirm the exact vehicle application before purchase.

Choose MX4 TS when

  • preserving front-bed space matters on the Maverick's short bed;
  • you want the lower-priced representative option;
  • you need the cover to fold fully for open-bed hauling; and
  • the selected rack's front uprights can sit outside the folded-panel envelope.

The exact Maverick MX4 TS `449324TS` is currently listed for 2022–2026 and includes T-slot rails. Its page describes full bed access and a 400-lb evenly distributed cover-surface rating. That surface rating does not increase the rack or vehicle limit.

The key installation check is panel movement. A rack may attach correctly to the T-slots yet prevent the panels from reaching the cab. If the uprights must move each time, call it conditional operation rather than full compatibility.

Choose Retrax XR when

  • you open and close the cover frequently with the rack installed;
  • avoiding folding-panel interference matters more than the canister space;
  • your chosen rack has a named Retrax XR adapter or package; or
  • you want the cover to stop at intermediate positions.

Retrax XR rails have documented paths with Yakima Tonneau Kit 1, Elevate and Maverick-specific Xtrusion builds. The tradeoff is the front-bed canister, which permanently consumes some of the already-short cargo box.

Do not buy Retrax MX by mistake. MX covers lack the XR accessory-track interface even though the cover names and vehicle applications look similar.

Paddleboards, kayaks and long cargo

For boards or boats, cover choice is only the foundation. Confirm rack height, crossbar spread, carrier instructions, bow/stern tie-downs and cab clearance. A rack-compatible cover does not prove that a particular watercraft is safely supported.

MX4 TS can be attractive when long cargo occasionally goes into the open bed. Retrax XR can be attractive when the cover must slide during repeated loading while the rack stays fixed. Measure the real cargo workflow rather than choosing on appearance.

Load limits

Use the lowest limit among the rack, cover tracks, adapters, crossbars, cargo carrier and Ford payload label. Do not add the cover's surface rating to the rack rating. Static tent loads and dynamic road loads are separate conditions.

Bottom line

The MX4 TS is the better value when bed space and full open-bed access dominate, provided the rack uprights clear the folded panels. Retrax XR is the easier operating system under a rack because the cover retracts instead of folding through the upright area, but its canister costs bed space and money. Choose the rack/adapter first, then buy the exact cover application that completes that documented system.
