Ford Maverick Payload vs Tow Rating vs Hitch Rating

THE LOWEST APPLICABLE LIMIT ALWAYS WINS

High confidence · Ford towing definitions · Last verified 26 Oct 2026

Tow rating limits loaded trailer weight; payload limits weight carried by the truck; hitch/receiver ratings limit the connecting hardware. Trailer tongue weight presses on the truck and therefore consumes payload. Passing one number never overrides another.

Verify the exact configuration before ordering.

A 4,000-lb tow rating does not mean the truck can carry 4,000 lb. Likewise, a receiver stamped 4,000/400 does not rerate a 2K Maverick.

Payload is used by people, cargo, aftermarket accessories, hitch hardware and tongue weight. The maximum-loaded-trailer figure assumes a lightly loaded tow vehicle; added truck load can reduce trailer capacity. GVWR and front/rear axle ratings remain separate boundaries.

Simple example

If a door label gives 1,300 lb payload and occupants/cargo/accessories total 900 lb, only 400 lb remains before considering tongue load. A trailer can be under the 4,000-lb headline yet make the truck exceed payload.

Bottom line

Weigh the real combination and use the lowest limit across vehicle, payload, axles, tires, receiver, ball mount, ball and trailer. Ratings are simultaneous constraints, not alternatives.
