Will a TRD Pro Grille and TSS Garnish Work on a Third-Gen Tacoma?

MATCH THE GRILLE TO THE YEAR, RADAR AND CAMERA

High confidence for the cited Toyota and Taco Vinyl configurations · Last verified 16 Oct 2026

Use a grille package matched to the exact year and factory equipment—not a generic 2016–2023 kit. In Taco Vinyl's documented example, 2018–2019 trucks receive a TSS garnish, while 2020–2023 trucks with the OEM front camera need the garnish, camera bracket and camera cutout. Those parts establish product fitment only; they do not prove radar or camera calibration.

A “2016–2023” grille is not one sensor configuration

The third-generation Tacoma spans two equipment boundaries that matter at the grille. Toyota made Toyota Safety Sense P standard across the Tacoma line for 2018. For the 2020 refresh, Toyota added new grille designs and made Panoramic View Monitor or Multi-Terrain Monitor equipment available on named grades and packages.

That means a grille shell can share a broad body-year description while the center garnish, radar arrangement and front-camera provision differ. Before ordering, record:

  1. The Tacoma's exact model year and VIN equipment.
  2. The exact grille maker and SKU—not just “Pro style.”
  3. Whether the truck has the factory grille-area radar.
  4. Whether it has an OEM front-facing camera.
  5. Which garnish, camera bracket, cutout and clips are included for that configuration.

The third-gen refresh fitment guide explains the wider 2018 and 2020 boundaries. This guide applies them to one grille decision.

What Toyota says is in the grille area

Toyota's 2018 Tacoma quick guide describes the pre-collision system as using an in-vehicle camera and a millimeter-wave radar mounted in the front grille. The owner's manual also warns against attaching accessories or stickers to the radar, grille emblem or surrounding area and against modifying or painting that area.

Most importantly for a swap, Toyota says to contact a dealer when the radar sensor, front grille or front bumper has been removed, installed or replaced. That is the service boundary. An aftermarket seller's garnish or bracket can answer “does this component attach to this grille?” It cannot certify the resulting radar aim, camera view or vehicle calibration.

Exact example: Taco Vinyl's current grille configurations

Taco Vinyl's current 2016–2023 Tacoma Pro-grille listing divides the product into three relevant groups:

Tacoma configurationWhat the cited listing documentsWhat still needs verification
2016–2017No TSS garnish or camera bracket in that configurationExact truck equipment and grille contents
2018–2019Matching TSS garnish includedCorrect grille option, radar-area installation and post-install system state
2020–2023TSS garnish, OEM-camera-compatible bracket and top camera cutout included in the cited configurationTruck actually has the OEM camera; exact bracket; Toyota inspection/service needs
Aftermarket cameraSeller says a different bracket is requiredCamera model, bracket, view, wiring and installation instructions

This table is product-specific. It is not permission to mix a Taco Vinyl garnish with a different grille or to assume another “2016–2023” listing uses the same hole pattern, sensor window or camera mount.

The TSS garnish must match the grille—not just the truck

A radar garnish is part of a system interface. Its exterior shape may look interchangeable while its clips, curvature, material, thickness and position relative to the sensor differ.

For the cited Taco Vinyl example, the separate garnish listing says it clips into that maker's 2016–2023 Pro grille. That supports the named pairing only. Before buying a replacement garnish, ask the grille maker for:

  • the compatible grille SKU and revision;
  • the supported Tacoma year/equipment group;
  • the exact garnish part or included component;
  • the radar mounting and clearance instructions; and
  • any Toyota service step the installation documentation calls out.

Do not paint, wrap, badge or mount lights over the radar-facing area merely because the exterior finish looks cosmetic. Toyota's radar precautions control here.

The 2020–2023 front camera is a separate fitment gate

The presence of a camera cutout does not prove that the camera bracket is right. Confirm all three elements:

  1. Equipment: the truck has the factory front-facing camera the bracket was designed to retain.
  2. Mechanical interface: the bracket matches the exact grille revision and OEM camera body/mount.
  3. View and service state: the installed camera is secure, unobstructed and handled according to Toyota's inspection or calibration procedure.

If the truck does not have the OEM camera, do not order the camera option simply because the model year is 2020 or newer. If it uses an aftermarket camera, use that camera maker's documented bracket and wiring path; the cited grille seller explicitly distinguishes the aftermarket-camera bracket.

Installation and verification checklist

Before disassembly

  • Save the VIN/build record and photograph the original grille, sensor, brackets, fasteners and camera view.
  • Confirm the complete included-parts list for the exact option selected.
  • Check whether clips or one-time-use retainers must be replaced.
  • Read the Toyota service requirements for the exact VIN and systems involved.

During installation

  • Do not force the garnish, enlarge sensor holes or improvise a radar mount.
  • Keep the radar-facing panel and sensor area clean and free of paint, film, badges and wiring.
  • Route camera wiring in the documented clips and away from sharp edges, heat and pinch points.
  • Tighten brackets and grille hardware to the applicable instructions rather than using appearance as an alignment check.

Before road use

  • Confirm every clip and bracket is secure and the camera view is correctly framed.
  • Check for warning messages or unavailable TSS/camera functions.
  • Follow Toyota's required inspection, adjustment or calibration process after the grille-area work.
  • Treat a warning, shifted camera image or lost function as a stop condition—not as a “wait and see” learning period.

Factory equipment is a recurring fitment input. Use the factory-options compatibility guide to verify the truck before shopping, then return to the exact grille maker's configuration.

Bottom line

Buy the grille, garnish and camera provision as one documented configuration. For Taco Vinyl's current example, the 2018–2019 and 2020–2023 product paths are not the same, and the factory front camera adds another bracket and cutout decision. After installation, let Toyota's sensor inspection and service requirements—not physical appearance or an aftermarket marketing claim—decide whether the system is ready.
