FITS WITH CONDITIONS
Yes—for a 2023 Tacoma differential, Red Line 75W85 GL-5 matches the viscosity and GL-5 specification Toyota calls for, and Red Line explicitly lists Toyota Gear Oil LT/LX replacements. Use it only in the differential being serviced, confirm axle configuration before buying quantity, and do not put this GL-5 product in the manual transmission or transfer case.
Fluid-use snapshot
| 2023 Tacoma service point | Red Line 75W85 GL-5 verdict | Required check |
|---|---|---|
| Front differential on applicable 4WD truck | Specification aligns | Confirm drivetrain and exact fill procedure/quantity. |
| Rear differential | Specification aligns | Confirm locker/configuration and exact capacity. |
| Manual transmission | Do not use | Toyota specifies GL-3 (GL-4), SAE 75W-90. |
| Transfer case | Do not infer fitment | Toyota specifies its separate LF/SAE 75W requirement. |
The differential specification and the named Red Line product align
The 2023 Tacoma Owner’s Manual specifies Toyota Genuine Differential Gear Oil LT 75W-85 GL-5 or equivalent for the front differential on 4WD trucks and the rear differential. It also warns that capacities vary with drivetrain, transmission, bed/cab configuration and whether the rear differential locks, so the fluid requirement alone is not a buying-quantity calculation.
Red Line’s own 75W85 GL-5 product page identifies the oil as SAE 75W85, API GL-5+, and a suitable replacement for Toyota/Lexus Gear Oil LT/LX. Those independent manufacturer documents support the conditional yes: the named Red Line product meets the specification Toyota publishes for the 2023 Tacoma differentials.
Keep the three gear-oil systems separate
Differentials: this is where this oil belongs
For the differential, the Toyota specification is 75W-85 GL-5 or equivalent. The Red Line product’s stated grade and Toyota Gear Oil LT/LX replacement listing align with that requirement. Verify the product label is specifically Red Line 75W85 GL-5 Gear Oil, not another Red Line fluid with a similar viscosity name.
Manual transmission: do not use this product by inference
Toyota specifies Manual Transmission Gear Oil GL-3 (GL-4) or equivalent, SAE 75W-90 for a 2023 manual Tacoma. Red Line likewise says its 75W85 GL-5 oil is not designed for most synchronized manual transmissions or transaxles. That is a different system and a different specification, so this guide is not approval for a manual-transmission fill.
Transfer case: also separate
Toyota specifies Toyota Genuine Transfer Gear Oil LF or equivalent, SAE 75W, for 4WD transfer cases. Do not use the differential answer to choose transfer-case fluid.
Service limits and unknowns
The Owner’s Manual calls capacities reference quantities and directs owners to their dealer if replacement is necessary. Follow the factory fill procedure and the vehicle’s exact configuration; this guide does not replace torque, fill-level or leak-diagnosis instructions. Toyota’s 2023 Warranty and Maintenance Guide also lists front/rear differential-oil replacement as additional maintenance for towing, heavy loading and certain operating conditions.
Bottom line
Red Line 75W85 GL-5 is a defensible differential-fluid choice for a 2023 Tacoma because both required specifications line up. It is not a universal “Tacoma gear oil”: confirm the axle and capacity, then keep it out of the manual transmission and transfer case. Manual-transmission owners should follow the separate 2023 Tacoma 75W-90 GL-3/GL-4 specification.
