Which Gear Oil Belongs in a 2023 Manual-Transmission Tacoma?

For the manual transmission in a 2023 Tacoma, use Toyota Genuine Manual Transmission Gear Oil GL-3 (GL-4) or an equivalent SAE 75W-90. Do not select the 75W-85 GL-5 differential oil just because it is also called gear oil; Toyota gives the manual transmission, differentials and transfer case different specifications.

Toyota gives the 2023 manual transmission its own specification

The 2023 Tacoma Owner’s Manual states that the manual transmission takes Toyota Genuine Manual Transmission Gear Oil GL-3 (GL-4) or equivalent and recommends SAE 75W-90. Toyota also notes that oil characteristics and operating conditions can affect idle sound, shift feel and fuel efficiency, and recommends its genuine manual-transmission oil for optimal performance.

This is not the same requirement Toyota gives the differentials: those use Toyota Genuine Differential Gear Oil LT 75W-85 GL-5 or equivalent. The 4WD transfer case has another requirement again: Toyota Genuine Transfer Gear Oil LF or equivalent, SAE 75W. Read the component name first, then select the fluid.

Why the GL-5 differential bottle is not the shortcut answer

Red Line’s own 75W85 GL-5 product documentation identifies it as a differential/final-drive product and cautions that it is not designed for most synchronized manual transmissions or transaxles. That does not name a replacement fluid for the Tacoma manual transmission; it reinforces why a GL-5 differential label is not evidence of manual-transmission suitability.

The relevant purchasing test is narrower: the candidate fluid must explicitly meet Toyota’s published GL-3 (GL-4), SAE 75W-90 manual-transmission requirement for this 2023 Tacoma. If its manufacturer does not document that specification, do not infer fitment from viscosity, brand, forum advice or a differential application.

Service conditions change maintenance, not the fluid target

Toyota’s 2023 Warranty and Maintenance Guide lists manual-transmission-oil replacement among additional items for driving while towing, carrying a car-top carrier or heavily loading the vehicle. It also identifies other special conditions such as dusty roads. That tells the owner when extra maintenance may be required; the Owner’s Manual still controls which fluid specification belongs in the transmission.

Configuration limits

This guide applies only to a 2023 Tacoma with the manual transmission. It does not choose oil for an automatic truck, the front or rear differential, or the transfer case. Capacities and procedures are not a universal fill instruction; use the exact manual and service information for the component being opened.

Bottom line

Buy GL-3 (GL-4), SAE 75W-90 manual-transmission gear oil or an equivalent that its maker says meets that Toyota specification for a 2023 manual Tacoma. Keep 75W-85 GL-5 differential fluid and SAE 75W transfer-case fluid in their separately specified systems. For the named differential product, use the separate Red Line 75W85 GL-5 differential guide.
