Can Double-Cab Running Boards Fit a Fourth-Gen Tacoma XtraCab?

DOES NOT FIT AS DOCUMENTED

High confidence · Last verified 5 Sep 2026

Do not fit Toyota’s cast aluminum running boards from a Double Cab to a fourth-generation XtraCab. Toyota labels that accessory “D-Cab Only” in both its Tacoma accessory brochure and current accessory catalogue. That establishes an exact Toyota limitation; it does not prove that every third-party XtraCab board or rock rail will fit.

Toyota's documented application ends at the Double Cab

Toyota describes its fourth-generation Cast Aluminum Running Boards as “D-Cab Only” in the 2024 Tacoma accessory brochure. The same limitation appears in Toyota’s current Tacoma accessory catalogue. Those are application statements, not a general visual comparison: a part intended for a Double Cab is not a documented XtraCab part.

That matters because the fourth-generation Tacoma is offered in both XtraCab and Double Cab configurations. A board’s bracket locations, length and door-step coverage have to match the cab it was engineered for. Toyota’s “D-Cab Only” wording is enough to reject a Double-Cab board as an XtraCab purchase; it is not evidence that the hardware can be safely modified to fit.

What this verdict does and does not cover

It covers the Toyota cast aluminum board application

The verdict is specifically about the Toyota accessory identified as Double-Cab-only. Buy that board only for the cab Toyota names. Confirm the actual part number with a Toyota dealer before ordering, because year, grade and accessory availability can change.

It does not make a rule for every step or rock rail

Toyota’s evidence does not establish that all XtraCab steps are unavailable, nor does it classify an aftermarket product as a structural slider. A third-party maker can document an XtraCab-specific board or rock rail, but that maker needs to show the exact fourth-generation XtraCab application and installation limits. A Double-Cab application, shared photo, or marketplace title is not a substitute.

If you are deciding between an access step and a structural rail, see Running Boards vs. Rock Sliders for Tacoma. That guide addresses the use-case trade-off; it does not change the cab-specific fitment requirement here.

Keep powered-board safety separate

If the truck has factory power running boards, the 2024 Tacoma Owner’s Manual says to confirm they are fully deployed or stowed before use and to keep people and objects clear while they move. Do not let a replacement-step decision bypass those operating precautions.

Bottom line

For Toyota’s cast aluminum running boards, a fourth-generation XtraCab is a no: Toyota documents the accessory for Double Cabs only. Choose an XtraCab-specific product with an exact application, and do not modify or force a Double-Cab board into place.
