Which Tacoma Bed Rack Can Carry a Roof Tent While Keeping a Factory Tri-Fold Cover?

Start with a rack that names your exact cover and bed. A factory tri-fold cover can retain bed-rail access, but that does not make every rail-mounted rack compatible or leave the folding panels free to operate. RCI explicitly marks the 2016+ Toyota hard tri-fold as incompatible with its adapter system; that is a reason to evaluate a different manufacturer or a different cover interface, not to assume every rack will fit.
The mounting interface decides it
Toyota describes its hard tri-fold cover as using the Deck Rail System while allowing access to bed rails. That is useful, but it is not a compatibility approval for a rack that shares those rails. See Toyota’s cover specification.
Generation matters too. A rack or adapter documented for the 2016–2023 Tacoma does not automatically fit the redesigned 2024+ bed, even when the cover architecture looks similar. The factory hard tri-fold is a known conflict for some systems
RCI’s compatibility guide marks the 2016+ Toyota hard tri-fold as incompatible with its tonneau-adapter system. Its installation guidance also explains why hard folding panels can contact rack legs as they open. That is direct evidence that a cover retaining rail access is not enough. Ask for an explicit combination and load rating
Choose a rack system that claims compatibility with your cover architecture and names its dynamic and static capacity. TRUKD states 300 lb dynamic and 1,000 lb static capacity for its T Series, offers a fourth-generation Tacoma selection, and describes tri-fold/retractable-cover mounting options; the maker still says cover compatibility can depend on the truck and should be confirmed before ordering. For an alternative with a documented interface rather than a generic rail claim, move to a T-slot retractable cover and a rack system that names it. Yakima’s OverHaul HD Tonneau Set specifically lists Retrax XR and RetraxPRO EZ-OFF covers among its compatible options, with 300 lb on-road and 180 lb off-road ratings. Bottom line
Buy the documented rack-cover combination, not a rack that merely appears to leave room above the bed. If your factory hard tri-fold is not named by the rack maker, either get written confirmation for that exact cover or choose a documented alternative such as a compatible T-slot cover system. Add the tent only after confirming rack dynamic load rating, static load rating and the cover’s operating envelope.
