MX4 IS THE HIGHER-SPEC COVER; G2 KEEPS THE CORE HARD-FOLD FUNCTION
Choose the MX4 Gen 3 for its textured matte finish, re-engineered seals/latches, 400-pound evenly distributed capacity and five-year warranty. Choose the G2 when 300 pounds evenly distributed, a semi-gloss finish and three-year warranty meet the need. Both fold against the cab for full-bed access, use automatic latches and require the correct five-foot or 6-foot-2-inch Tacoma SKU plus the Deck Rail System.

The fitment decision comes before MX4 versus G2
RealTruck currently lists both covers for the 2024–2026 Tacoma in separate five-foot and 6-foot-2-inch applications. It also says the Tacoma installation requires the Deck Rail System; if absent, the system can be purchased from Toyota.
Do not order by “short bed” alone. Use the exact pair:
- five-foot bed: MX4 448446 or G2 226446;
- 6-foot-2-inch bed: MX4 448447 or G2 226447.
Then check conflicts with factory storage, cargo dividers, racks, toolboxes, rail accessories and any power-tailgate equipment. An exact cover-to-truck listing does not approve a second accessory sharing the same rail or clamp space.
What the MX4 upgrade buys
The current MX4 is the Gen 3 design, not just a different surface finish. RealTruck documents reinforced aluminum panels over a high-density core, re-engineered automatic latches, revised perimeter seals and tight-fit clamps, a longer dual-action tailgate seal on most applications, and a click-in installation system.
Its published capacity is 400 pounds evenly distributed, and its limited warranty is five years. The finish is textured matte black across the cover and hardware.
That makes the MX4 the better starting point if you expect occasional evenly distributed top loads, want the longer warranty, or prefer the newest sealing/latch architecture. It does not authorize concentrated loads, standing on the cover or mounting a rack directly to the panels.
What the G2 retains
The G2 keeps most of the behavior buyers associate with BAKFlip: aluminum-skinned solid-core panels, automatic slam latches, perimeter seals, drainage rails/tubes and the ability to fold the cover against the cab for full-bed access.
Its published capacity is 300 pounds evenly distributed, with a three-year limited warranty. The finish is semi-gloss black, and the installation uses the conventional no-drill rail-and-clamp system.
Choose the G2 if those limits and finish meet the actual use. It is not a soft cover or a fundamentally different opening system; the savings decision is mainly whether the MX4's extra published capacity, revised hardware and two additional warranty years matter to you.
Shared compromises
Both covers occupy the inside bed-rail area and fold forward in sections. Both ultimately stand against the cab for maximum bed access. That creates the same categories of trade-off:
- rail-mounted racks and accessories need documented compatibility;
- the upright stack changes rear-window visibility and must be secured exactly as instructed;
- drain tubes need a clear routing path;
- water resistance is not the same as a waterproof bed; and
- cargo security still depends on closing and locking the tailgate.
Neither cover's top-load rating is a rack rating. If a future bed rack or rooftop tent is part of the build, start with a rack/cover system documented to work together rather than treating the tonneau panel capacity as a structural foundation.
Installation checks
RealTruck describes both as no-drill installations that can be completed in under 30 minutes, but a marketing time estimate is not a fitment guarantee. Before tightening:
- verify the SKU against the measured bed and model year;
- confirm the Deck Rail System and correct Tacoma clamp hardware;
- test rail height, tailgate seal and cab-side seal before final torque;
- route drain tubes without pinching or interfering with bed equipment;
- open and close every panel and confirm both latches engage evenly;
- fold the cover upright and verify the props/retainers hold it securely; and
- recheck clamp tightness after the first week and periodically thereafter.
Use the full Tacoma tonneau-cover installation checklist before combining the cover with other bed accessories.
Which should you buy?
- Buy the MX4 Gen 3 if the 400-pound evenly distributed rating, textured matte finish, revised sealing/latching system and five-year warranty justify the step up.
- Buy the G2 if 300 pounds evenly distributed, semi-gloss finish and a three-year warranty cover the use and you mainly want the shared hard-fold security and full-bed-access behavior.
- Buy neither yet if the bed length, Deck Rail System or rack/toolbox compatibility is still unverified.
If you need integrated T-slots for a compatible rack, compare the separate MX4 TS, X4 TS and RetraxONE XR systems rather than assuming a rack can clamp to either standard cover.
Bottom line
The G2 delivers the core BAKFlip hard-fold design. The MX4 Gen 3 adds a higher published evenly distributed capacity, revised seals/latches/clamps, textured matte finish and two more warranty years. Choose between those benefits only after matching the exact bed-length SKU and confirming the Deck Rail System and accessory interfaces.
