Ford Maverick Factory vs Aftermarket Brake Controller
USE THE FACTORY CONTROLLER WHEN THE MAVERICK HAS 4K TOW; USE A DOCUMENTED PROPORTIONAL AFTERMARKET SYSTEM ONLY FOR A NON-4K TRUCK THAT NEEDS ELECTRIC-TRAILER-BRAKE CONTROL
The 2025–2026 4K package already includes an integrated controller and 7-pin. On a non-4K truck, a REDARC-style hidden proportional controller can add brake control, but it does not add the 4K cooling hardware or raise the 2,000-lb vehicle rating.
Confirm the trailer brake type and the complete 7-way power/brake circuit before purchase.
Ford's integrated controller uses vehicle brake information to apply compatible electric or electric-over-hydraulic trailer brakes. It is included in the 4K Tow Package with the 7-pin connector. If that controller is present and working, adding a second aftermarket controller is unnecessary.
| Truck state | Correct path | What it does not do |
|---|---|---|
| Factory 4K Tow | Use the integrated controller and Ford instructions | Does not eliminate trailer setup and gain adjustment |
| Non-4K with 4-pin only | Add a complete 7-way/brake-power installation plus controller if the trailer requires it | Does not raise the 2K vehicle rating |
| Non-4K with completed 7-way | Choose a documented proportional controller and accessible manual override | Does not substitute for 4K cooling/package equipment |
REDARC's Tow-Pro Liberty is a proportional controller with a small dash knob and hidden main unit; the current Maverick listing is for vehicles without the factory tow package and may require a universal harness and 7-way conversion. A conventional under-dash proportional controller can also work, but knee clearance and a reachable manual override matter.
Do not assume a 7-pin socket means the brake-output wire, power feed and grounds are complete. Have the installation tested at the connector, then set gain using the controller and trailer makers' procedures. If the trailer uses surge brakes, an electric-brake controller is not the same system.
Compatibility snapshot
| Decision point | What this guide establishes |
|---|---|
| 4K-equipped truck | Factory controller is already the integrated answer |
| Non-4K truck | Aftermarket proportional control is possible with correct wiring |
| Rating effect | None; controller does not rerate the Maverick |
| Verification | Trailer brake type, 7-way circuits, controller mounting and manual override |
Bottom line
First determine whether the truck has the factory 4K controller. For a non-4K Maverick, buy a brake-control system for safer control of a compatible trailer—not as a 4K conversion.
