CHECK BY MODEL YEAR
A tow package can provide a 7-pin trailer connector without including an in-cab brake controller. For example, Toyota listed a 4- and 7-pin connector in the 2020 V6 Tow Package, while certain 2024 Tacomas have an integrated controller. Confirm what is installed before adding anything.
Equipment snapshot
| What the truck has | What it proves | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| 2020 V6 Tow Package with factory 4/7-pin connector | Rear trailer connection is documented | Verify powered brake-output readiness and controller installation path. |
| Seven-pin socket alone | Does not prove an in-cab controller is installed | Inspect VIN equipment, controls and the owner's manual. |
| Toyota integrated controller, when equipped | Factory controller operates through the 7-pin connection | Do not add a third-party controller alongside it. |
| Unknown trim, engine or aftermarket hitch wiring | Readiness unknown | Identify the exact truck and test the connector. |
A trailer connector and a brake controller are different equipment
Toyota's 2020 V6 Tow Package included a Class IV receiver and a 4- and 7-pin connector with converter. That establishes trailer wiring at the rear of the truck; it does not mean Toyota supplied an in-cab aftermarket brake-controller harness or controller on every Tacoma. The engine matters too: Toyota described that package as standard on V6 models. See Toyota's 2020 Tow Package specification.
Newer Tacomas may already have the controller
Toyota's 2024 Tacoma quick-reference guide describes an integrated trailer brake controller, when equipped, that operates through the 7-pin connector and warns against using a third-party controller alongside it. That is why the first question is not “which harness?” but “does this exact truck already have the factory controller?” Read Toyota's 2024 trailer-brake-controller guidance.
What to verify before ordering
Check the truck's build equipment, rear connector and owner's manual; then confirm the trailer has electric or electric-over-hydraulic brakes. A portable controller needs a compatible powered 7-way connection. An in-cab controller needs the correct vehicle-side connection or documented installation path. Neither is useful for a trailer without compatible electric brakes.
Bottom line
Treat the tow package as a starting point, not proof of brake-controller readiness. A 2020 V6 package includes rear 4/7-pin connectivity; an equipped 2024 may already have Toyota's controller. For a newer factory-equipment decision, see 2025 SR5 integrated trailer-brake-controller fitment.
