DIODE DYNAMICS OFFERS MORE CHOICE; RIGID OFFERS ONE COMPLETE 4-INCH PATH
For a non-TRD-Pro 2016–2023 Tacoma with factory fog lamps, Diode Dynamics SS3 is the stronger value/configuration path because Sport, Pro, Max and dual-color kits share one documented application. Choose Rigid's 360-Series kit if you specifically want its 4-inch round SAE system and included harness. The Diode kit explicitly excludes TRD Pro, so a TRD Pro owner must not apply this comparison without a separate exact fitment record.
Named-kit comparison
| Kit | Documented application | Choice structure | Important boundary |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rigid 360-Series SAE, SKU 37116 | 2016–2023 Tacoma | Fixed 4-inch round white SAE kit; yellow sibling kit available | Current listing includes H11 plug kit plus harness/switch; verify the exact kit contents at checkout |
| Diode Dynamics SS3 Type B | 2016–2023 Tacoma with OEM fog lamps | Sport, Pro, Max and dual-color; white/yellow variants | Product page explicitly says not compatible with TRD Pro |
Both manufacturers document SAE J583 fog-pattern compliance. That is more meaningful for road use than buying an off-road flood pod simply because its lumen number is larger.
Where Diode Dynamics has the advantage
The SS3 page publishes several power/output tiers and measured beam data. Sport is the entry point, Pro increases intensity, Max is the highest-output option, and the dual-color model switches between white and selective yellow while retaining the same fog pattern. The kit includes two angled pods, Type B brackets, H11-to-DT backlight tap wires and mounting hardware.
This makes Diode Dynamics easier to tailor to budget and weather preference. It does not mean Max is automatically the best street choice. Aim matters, excessive foreground brightness can be tiring, and local lighting rules still apply.
Where Rigid has the advantage
Rigid's named Tacoma kit is a single, complete 4-inch round 360-Series SAE path. The current listing documents vehicle-specific brackets, mounting hardware, an H11 plug kit and a harness with relay and switch. It also publishes beam intensity and beam angles for the exact kit.
Choose it when that 4-inch round package, its supplied harness architecture or the Rigid ecosystem is the goal. Do not call it “the TRD Pro fog” and assume factory TRD Pro interchangeability; the product page lists Tacoma years, not universal compatibility with every factory fog-light housing.
Can the published output numbers be ranked directly?
Only with care. Rigid lists raw lumens, lux at 10 meters and peak beam intensity for its complete kit. Diode Dynamics publishes measured and raw lumens plus candela and lux per individual pod across several tiers. Raw lumens and measured lumens are not interchangeable, and pair-versus-pod reporting can mislead.
For an honest comparison, use the same quantity and metric: exact kit, white or yellow optic, candela/lux, beam pattern, aiming and electrical load. Do not reduce the decision to the largest lumen figure.
Installation and factory-equipment checks
Diode Dynamics says its kit replaces OEM fog lamps and requires additional hardware/wiring when the truck did not have them. Its page lists no modification and an estimated 30–60-minute installation for the documented application. Rigid lists OEM mounting hardware and supplies both plug adapters and a separate relay harness.
Before buying, inspect the factory connector and housing, decide whether auxiliary backlighting will be used, and read the current wiring instructions. Disconnect power before servicing the vehicle's electrical system and aim the lights after installation.
Compatibility snapshot
| Vehicle/application | Result | Required check |
|---|---|---|
| 2016–2023 non-TRD-Pro Tacoma with factory fog lamps + exact SS3 Type B kit | Fits as documented | Select tier/color SKU and follow current wiring/aiming instructions |
| 2016–2023 Tacoma + Rigid 360-Series kit 37116 | Fits as documented by Rigid | Confirm factory housing/connector and current included harness path |
| TRD Pro + Diode Dynamics SS3 Type B kit on the cited page | Does not fit as documented | Use only a separate product explicitly listing that TRD Pro configuration |
| Tacoma without factory fog lamps | Additional system required | Confirm bezels, switch, relay, fuse and harness before ordering |
Bottom line
Start with Diode Dynamics SS3 when you want the widest choice of price, output and color. Start with Rigid 360-Series when you want its complete 4-inch round Tacoma kit. The exact truck and exact SKU decide fitment; brand reputation and a “TRD Pro” nickname do not.
