RetraxPRO MX vs GatorTrax for a 2016–2023 Tacoma

CHOOSE BY MATERIAL, LOAD JOB AND WARRANTY—AFTER BED FITMENT PASSES

High confidence for the cited current applications · Last verified 15 Oct 2026

Choose RetraxPRO MX when you need its documented 500-pound evenly distributed top-load rating, double-wall aluminum slats and limited lifetime warranty. Choose GatorTrax when a simpler polycarbonate retractable cover meets the job. Both have separate 5-foot-1 and 6-foot-2 Tacoma SKUs, consume bed space with a canister and exclude factory bed storage boxes.

This is an exact-family comparison, not a claim about every Retrax or Gator cover. Confirm the live part number and availability before ordering.

Bed length is the first decision

A 2016–2023 Tacoma label is not enough. Match the cover to the actual bed:

  • 5-foot-1 bed: RetraxPRO MX 80851 or GatorTrax G60851.
  • 6-foot-2 bed: RetraxPRO MX 80852 or GatorTrax G60852.

The cited pages also say these applications do not work with the Tacoma's factory side or bed storage boxes. That exclusion is decisive: do not assume the box can remain because the rails appear to clear it.

Confirm the bed from measurements or the truck's build information, then review the current SKU-specific instructions. Use the tonneau-cover installation checklist to check Deck Rail hardware, clamps, drains, seals, liners and other bed accessories.

Choose RetraxPRO MX for aluminum and documented top loading

RetraxPRO MX uses double-wall aluminum slats with a matte-black powder-coated finish. RealTruck publishes a 500-pound evenly distributed top-load rating and a limited lifetime warranty for the cited cover family. Its sealed-roller system retracts into a reinforced canister, and the keyed latch can hold the cover open in unlimited positions.

That makes it the clearer choice when top-of-cover load capacity is a real requirement rather than a marketing extra. The number still has boundaries: “evenly distributed” does not approve a point load, a person standing on the panel, or a rack attached without explicit approval. Any rack plan needs its own documented rail and load path.

Choose this route when the added material and warranty matter enough to justify the premium position—and when the exact truck passes the storage-box and bed-length checks.

Choose GatorTrax for a simpler polycarbonate retractable cover

GatorTrax uses polycarbonate slats running on sealed, maintenance-free ball bearings. The cover can be key-locked in any position, and its current page publishes an 11-by-11-inch canister. Installation uses clamp-on rails without drilling for the cited Tacoma applications.

The tradeoff is documentation: the cited page does not give GatorTrax the RetraxPRO MX's 500-pound top-load claim, and the published warranty is one year. Do not transfer the aluminum cover's capacity to this model merely because both retract and share a similar layout.

Choose GatorTrax when you want the retractable operation and low-profile covered bed but do not need the RetraxPRO MX's stated load rating or lifetime-warranty path.

Both covers give up bed space to a canister

Neither cover folds completely out of the way. The slats roll into a housing at the cab end, so the installed system reduces usable bed volume and leaves the canister in place when tall or long cargo is loaded.

Before ordering, map the canister against coolers, drawers, a bed divider, a bed rack and any cargo that normally sits tight to the cab. If preserving maximum bed volume matters more than one-handed retractable operation, compare other architectures in the hard tonneau-cover selection guide.

Lockable does not mean waterproof or theft-proof

Both systems provide keyed locking, and both use drainage features to manage water. Neither cited page supports treating the bed as a waterproof safe. Water can enter around rails, tailgate gaps and drain interfaces, while determined theft can defeat a cover or the truck itself.

Use weather-resistant containers for sensitive cargo, keep drains routed and clear, and test the installed cover with controlled water before trusting it in a storm. Recheck rail alignment and latch engagement after the first drives.

Which should you buy?

  • Choose RetraxPRO MX for the stated 500-pound evenly distributed rating, aluminum slats and limited lifetime warranty.
  • Choose GatorTrax for polycarbonate construction and retractable convenience when no equivalent top-load rating is required.
  • Choose neither yet if bed length is uncertain, factory storage boxes are present, the canister conflicts with cargo, or the exact SKU is not currently confirmed.

Bottom line

RetraxPRO MX is the stronger documented load-and-warranty choice; GatorTrax is the simpler polycarbonate retractable choice. The decision only matters after the exact bed-length SKU passes and the truck has no excluded factory storage boxes. Include canister space, drainage and any rack plan in the fitment decision.
