WORTH CONSIDERING FOR THE DOCUMENTED V6 AUTOMATIC APPLICATION—AS A DETERRENT
The Cali Raised shield is a credible bolt-on theft-deterrence option for a 2016–2023 Tacoma with the documented V6 automatic configuration. The current product page lists Access Cab and both Double Cab bed lengths, supplies driver- and passenger-side 12-gauge 304 stainless guards, security hardware and an install tool, and separates 4WD CR3876 from 2WD CR3877. It does not fit manual-transmission or four-cylinder trucks, and no shield makes a converter theft-proof.
What you are buying
Cali Raised documents a pair of laser-cut, CNC-bent 12-gauge 304 brushed stainless-steel guards covering the driver- and passenger-side converters. The kit uses existing mounting locations and includes four security bolts, washers, rubber bumpers and the matching tool. The maker says no drilling or welding is required for the named application.
That is a meaningful package because both converter sides and the special fastener tool are included. The buyer still has to preserve the tool for later service and follow the current instructions.
The fitment limits are strict
The page lists 2016–2023 Access Cab, Double Cab short-bed and Double Cab long-bed trucks, including PreRunner, but only with the V6 and automatic transmission. It explicitly says the product does not fit manual-transmission models.
The installation section distinguishes the 4WD shield CR3876 from the 2WD shield CR3877. Confirm the selected SKU at checkout rather than relying on the broad product title. A four-cylinder or manual truck needs a different documented solution; do not drill or bend this shield to force it onto one.
How it interacts with skid plates
Cali Raised says the guard works with its skid plates and other common skid systems, but its installation workflow requires removing an aftermarket transmission skid and reinstalling it after the shields. Treat “works with” as the manufacturer's statement for its documented application—not proof for every discontinued, modified or custom skid.
Before ordering, compare the current instructions with the exact transmission skid SKU and inspect for prior frame, crossmember or exhaust modifications. Resolve any disagreement with both manufacturers in writing.
Is it effective?
It is reasonable to call the system a deterrent. Stainless panels and tamper-resistant fasteners can add time, tool changes and noise between a thief and the converters. The product page does not establish a universal theft-prevention rate, and customer reviews cannot prove that an attempted theft would fail.
That distinction matters. Buy it to make access harder, not because a marketing claim or review promises immunity. Sensible parking and other deterrence layers still help.
Installation and service considerations
Let the exhaust cool completely. Work only on level ground with properly rated stands or a lift; never go under a truck supported only by a jack. The manufacturer says not to paint the shields because converters run hot.
After installation, confirm that the guards do not contact the exhaust and that all factory and supplied fasteners are tightened according to the current instructions. Retain the security tool with the truck's service records, but not where it is obvious to an opportunistic thief.
Compatibility snapshot
| Tacoma configuration | Result | Required check |
|---|---|---|
| 2016–2023 V6 automatic 4WD in listed cab/bed forms | CR3876 documented | Confirm exact SKU and existing skid interaction |
| 2016–2023 V6 automatic 2WD/PreRunner in listed forms | CR3877 path documented | Confirm current selected 2WD variant and instructions |
| Manual transmission or 2.7L four-cylinder | Does not fit as documented | Find a separate manufacturer-approved application |
| Modified/custom transmission skid or exhaust | Unknown until confirmed | Obtain written compatibility from the relevant manufacturers |
Bottom line
CR3876/CR3877 is worth considering when the truck exactly matches the V6 automatic application and the owner wants a well-defined bolt-on deterrent. It is not worth gambling on for a manual, four-cylinder or unresolved skid combination. Fitment discipline matters more than the review count.
