Can a 2000 Tacoma 5-Lug Get a 2–2.5-Inch Lift?

DO NOT BUY A GENERIC TACOMA 2.5-INCH KIT
A 2000 Tacoma with the 2WD five-lug front end requires a five-lug-specific lift solution; the common Tacoma kits cited here explicitly exclude it. Rough Country's 1995–2004 2.5-inch kit says it does not fit five-lug models, and Belltech's 34955 is for six-lug trucks. A specialist five-lug front-end system exists, but it is a 2–4-inch fabricated, wider-travel setup—not evidence of a simple generic spacer-kit fit.
Compatibility snapshot
| Lift path | Five-lug 2000 Tacoma verdict | Required check |
|---|---|---|
| Rough Country 1995–2004 2.5-inch Tacoma kit | Does not fit as documented | Maker explicitly excludes five-lug models. |
| Belltech 34955 | Not a five-lug application | Maker lists six-lug Tacoma trucks. |
| JD Fabrication 2WD five-lug front-end kit | Documented specialist path | Accept wider track, cutting/welding, coilovers and alignment work. |
| Generic Tacoma spacer/leveling kit | Unknown or incompatible | Require explicit 2WD five-lug application before purchase. |
“1995–2004 Tacoma” is not enough fitment information
The key constraint is the five-lug 2WD front end, not merely the truck's 2000 model year. Rough Country's 1995–2004 2.5-inch Tacoma lift prominently states that it does not fit five-lug models. Its general Tacoma title should therefore not be read as a fitment approval for this truck.
Belltech's 34955 2.5-inch leveling spacer kit gives the same practical warning from an independent manufacturer: its specified Tacoma application is 1999.5–2004 six-lug trucks, and it is not a five-lug fitment. Two current product applications excluding the configuration are stronger evidence than a marketplace title that only says “Tacoma.”
What a true five-lug-specific system looks like
JD Fabrication's 95–04 Tacoma 2WD 5-Lug Front End Kit explicitly identifies the five-lug 2WD truck and provides 2–4 inches of lift. Its scope makes the trade-off clear: the system increases track width, calls for cutting and welding, moves the tire forward, and is built around coilovers and revised front-end components. It is a documented five-lug option, but it is not comparable to bolting in a basic 2–2.5-inch spacer.
How to make the buying decision
If you want a simple, mild lift
Do not order either cited generic 2.5-inch kit. The available manufacturer documentation excludes the five-lug layout, and this guide has not found a manufacturer instruction set that establishes a simple 2–2.5-inch bolt-on path for this exact front end. Get a vehicle-specific application from the prospective manufacturer in writing before purchase.
If you want a fabricated long-travel build
The JD Fabrication system is evidence that the five-lug platform can be lifted when the product is engineered for it. Budget for the documented fabrication and geometry changes, not only the purchase price. Alignment, wheel/tire clearance, brake-line routing, and required cutting/welding should be handled by a qualified installer according to the product instructions.
What the evidence does not establish
The sources do not prove that every 2000 five-lug Tacoma has the same previous modifications, load, wheel/tire size, or intended ride height. They also do not establish an interchangeable six-lug/PreRunner/4WD solution, a tire-clearance guarantee, or a safe DIY fabrication plan.
Do not use a spacer kit's listed maximum tire size as a guarantee for this five-lug truck. A lift changes neither the manufacturer’s application limit nor the need to verify wheel offset, tire dimensions, steering travel, alignment, and suspension condition.
Bottom line
A 2000 Tacoma five-lug can be lifted, but not with a generic kit that lists six-lug Tacoma fitment or excludes five-lug trucks. For a simple 2–2.5-inch goal, stop until a manufacturer supplies an exact five-lug application. For a purpose-built system, the JD Fabrication 2–4-inch front end is a documented—but materially more involved—path. Any new wheel/tire package must then pass the separate wheel-offset and clearance checks.

- Belltech 34955 2.5-inch leveling kit, accessed 2026-09-06. Independent manufacturer application identifies 1999.5–2004 six-lug Tacoma trucks only, plus its stated lift and alignment requirement; it does not authorize a five-lug installation.
